Welcome back to the Eastbrook Homes blog. This week we’re starting a new series to chat about the KonMari method, a simple approach to organization that helps people overcome the tendency to keep all of the stuff they may not need but don’t know how to part with like books, papers, and sentimental items.
Organization expert, Marie Kondo, became a household name seemingly overnight with her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. In the book that started the Kondo Craze, she shares six simple rules for tidying up around the house.
Incredibly, Kondo formed a consulting company to help people with organization when she was just 19 years old, while still in school in Tokyo. Over the last decade, her company, driven by the book and the success of her methods, has grown to more than 200 organization experts available for hire around the world.
The KonMari method is based on a simple principle that helps people decide to keep or toss an item. The method also encourages people to “tidy-up” by category instead of tackling the entire project at once, which can make organization seem like an insurmountable task.
The six KonMari rules for organizing your home are –
- Imagine the ideal life you wish to live
- Discard first
- Tidy by category
- Follow the order above
- Ask yourself “Does this item spark joy?”
Although her approach seems simple, the last rule really drives the entire process with a simple, yet powerful guideline. By asking yourself if an item sparks “joy,” it’s easier to choose to keep or part with something that may be taking up space in your home for no real reason.
