It’s Moving Day! Now What?
It’s Moving Day! Now What?
After all the work you’ve put into purchasing your new home, there is great relief in circling the move-in date on the calendar. You’ve taken extra care in packing your belongings, planning for the move, and spending free time daydreaming of your new home. Now that the day is here and the moving truck is pulling into your new driveway, the classic “What do I do now?” moment is sure to hit. We have been helping families create the homes of their dreams for 55+ years, and have helped new owners through this moment countless times. Along with the obvious and exciting parts like unpacking, organizing and decorating rooms throughout your house, there are a few things some homeowners overlook. Add these items to your list- you will be glad you did!
Locate Main Systems.
With a new home you should have the confidence and assurance that all systems in your home will be working perfectly. Whether an accident happens or mother nature comes calling, you may need to know where your breaker box and main water shutoff valve are before you planned. Make sure everybody in your family is familiar with their location and function. Safety First. This is another great thing to go over with the entire family. Make sure everybody can locate all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. This will help greatly when the time comes to change all the batteries. If you are installing a home security system, teach the family to use it properly during this step as well.
Start a Sample File.
Our Home Creation Studio was created to showcase the wide range of design options and features we offer, so we trust you will be moving into a home you already love top to bottom. After a couple years, however, you may decide it is time to change a room color, countertop, or other feature. If you’ve been collecting paint color, flooring, fabric, and tile samples, create a spot to save them- when it comes time to do some minor updates in your home, this will be the place to start.
Donate and Recycle.
Packing your belongings before a move is a prime time to decide what you do not need any more and donate to a worthy cause.Unpacking and organizing your items is another opportunity to do that and catch anything that slipped through the cracks. You’ve likely used a load of boxes for your move. Before you recycle them, see if you have any friends preparing for a move that could use them.
Meet the Neighbors.
This one seems obvious, but it’s important to keep on your checklist! Moving day, and the following days, can be incredibly busy for the whole family. Schedule a time during your day to take a break to eat, relax, and walk around your new neighborhood. The break will be much-needed and you’ll start forming new relationships on day one.
We love sharing in your excitement over a new home every step of the way- from planning, to building, to move-in day. Hopefully these tips help make it a great start to your new adventure.
