Nunica was established in 1865 and named after the Native American word, “menonica,” meaning, “clay earth.” A long-standing farming community, Nunica proudly maintains its agricultural history while boasting close proximity to Grand Haven, Grand Rapids, I-96, and the new US-231 bypass.
Nunica residents enjoy easy access to a number of parks, including Crockery Creek Natural Area, which offers hiking and cross-country ski trails, archery deer hunting, and waterfowl hunting. The Nunica Junction Trailhead connects residents to North Bank Trail, an asphalt bike, walking, and cross-country skiing path that was once used as a railroad line. Friends of the North Bank Trail are working to extend North Bank Trail to connect with other West Michigan recreation trails, including the Lakeside Trail in Spring Lake and the Fred Meijer Pioneer Trail near Grand Rapids.
Kick back and relax after a bike ride or hike at one of Nunica’s wonderful local restaurants. Turk’s Tavern offers delicious meals in a cozy setting, with menu choices including delicious items like char-grilled steaks, fresh spinach salads, and handmade desserts. Crockery Creek Saloon takes you on a journey into the past with their nostalgic, wild-west setting and menu stacked with snacks, salads, seafood, and burgers.
