At Eastbrook Homes, we’ve designed our communities in West Michigan and Greater Lansing, Michigan to be places where new homeowners and established residents alike can find themselves right at home.
Great neighborhoods are often characterized by a strong sense of community and unity. For first-time homeowners, here are some tips and ideas that can help ensure the first home experience is the best it can be, beginning with moving day.
Be Courteous –
Spend some time establishing boundaries when moving in. Locate the best spots for cars and trucks to park as they begin to unload, and mark off walkways to ensure your moving day army isn’t wandering on to someone else’s turf.
Introduce Yourself –
The best way to get off on the right foot with neighbors is to meet them face to face. Meeting them all and creating the relationships will make living in your chosen community a great experience.
Relationships with neighbors can lead to picnics and barbeques, and they can also add to safety and security. Exchange numbers with those you trust to establish a point of contact. If you keep an eye out for problems at their house, they’ll watch yours. Even a garage door that was left open when leaving on vacation can be resolved with a simple phone call.
Be Considerate of Established Residents –
As the new family, you’ll need to establish your own habits and routines. While that happens, pay attention to the things around you, such as where your neighbor park their cars or where their kids like to play. Are they imposing on you at all? Probably not. They also want to be courteous of those around them. If you have an issue, simply discuss it with them. There is no need to begin a conflict over the parking habits of another resident when they don’t affect you.
Watch your Pets –
It’s easy to forget that your pets are also creatures of habit and have specific daily needs. If you have a dog, be respectful of other’s property, and personal boundaries.
If you have a dog that needs to be walked, be sure to keep them within your own yard or walk them in designated areas within the community. And don’t forget to pick up the waste they’ve left behind.
Want to Meet Everyone Quickly? Host an Event! –
To get to know the people around you, put on a barbeque, or even a simple meet and greet to extend a hand to the people around you. Or, attend other people’s events when invited. A barbeque presents an easy way to discover the diverse people around you all at once.
If you’re willing to be a part of the community around your new home, you’ll discover new friends, babysitters, dog walkers, painters, tax professionals, and so much more. If you have something to offer that can help your group, such as house painting services or computer repairs, you’ll be rewarded by the wonderful people in your new community who are willing to trade services and help you settle in.
At Eastbrook Homes, we’ve designed our Eastbrook Communities with our homeowners in mind. Many communities include parks, trails, and even ponds and lakes. Please make use of the resources around you and be sure to look for common ground between you and the family next door.
